The names of the etching printmakers are found in the early Japanese nautical charts published from 1872 to 1878. Recent investigations on old Japanese charts revealed that 14 etching printmakers created the copper plates of the nautical charts, including MATSUDA Ryuzan, who was the etching printmaker of the first modern Japanese chart. To print large volumes is one of the requirements of modern nautical charts. This paper described the careers and achievements of these important etching printmakers, in order to promote a deeper understanding of the situation surrounding chart printings in the early days of the Japanese Hydrographic Office.Journal
