Descriptive and comparative osteology of premaxillary and dentary bones of four frequent bony fish species in the archaeological record of CubaAbstract
Currently, Cuba does not have a sufficiently representative osteological collection of the fishes that dwell in its waters, which constitutes a barrier for conducting studies of identification, systematic and ichthioarcheology. In Cuba there are very few works dealing with the osteology of bony fishes. The objec- tives of this work is to provide osteological characters that allow the identification of four bony fish species from the premaxillary and dentary bones and to compare the bones mentioned among the species study object keeping in mind the morphological variations. The creation of a cranial osteological collection of frequent bony fishes in Cuban waters began. The selected species were: Lu- tjanus analis, Epinephelus striatus, Mycteroperca venenosa and Sphyraena barracuda because of their incidence in the country's ichthioarcheological record. Premaxillary and dentary bones were used, due to their high variability between species and resistance to the passage of time in archaeological sites. The osteological descriptions of the premaxillary and dentary allowed the deter- mination of discriminant characters for the identification of the four species. The studied species can be differentiated from shape, size and direction of the ascending, articular and maxillary processes, belonging to the pre- maxillary bone; and the angulation between the branches, the dentition and the presence of recesses in the dentary.
