El objetivo de este trabajo es establecer las especies de eufáusidos que caracterizan a las masas de agua en el Pacífico sudeste durante "El Niño 1997".This study concerns the distribution, composition and relative abundance of euphausiids in the Southeastern Pacific Ocean, in december de 1997, during "El Niño conditions". Thirteen species were identified from approximately 1619 org/m³ and they are: Stylocheiron sp., S. carinatum; S. affine; S. elongatum, S. longicorne; Nematoscelis sp., N. microps; Nematobrachion flexipes; Euphausia eximia; E. tener; E. lamelligera; E. gibboides; E. distinguenda; E. diomedae y Nyctiphanes simplex. Eleven of the euphausiids live in epipelagic marine environment, and only two are mesopelagic. Sixty-nine percent of the species were located in their respective latitudinal zones (Brinton, 1962, Boltovskoy,1975; Cornejo de González, 1980, Antezana, 1981), excep: Euphausia eximia that normally is distributed between 40°N - 30°S; E. lamelligera between 25°N-10°S; E. distinguenda between 30°N-20°S,y E. diomedae between 25°N-25°S. These four species extended their southward distribution to 31°23?S, in waters with temperatures of 17.9°C and 11.6°C; and salinities of 34.4‰ and 34.6‰, from 0 and 200 m. de profundidad, respectively. This study demostrates the increased distribution of four species of euphausiids in the Southeastern Pacific Ocean during "El Niño 1997-1998".
