Mercury distribution and organic matter isotopic composition in surface sediment from from Guacanayabo gulf, Cuba.Abstract
From the coastal area east of the Gulf of Guacanayabo, province of Granma, Cuba, ten sites were sampled between the towns of Campechuela and Niquero, and two sites in Laguna Marea del Portillo, south coast of Granma; areas that constitute habitat for shrimp, fish, oysters, among other marine species. The objective was to determine the concentration levels and spatial distribution of mercury (Hg) and the isotopic composition of organic matter in surface sediments. The granulometry, the elemental composition of the nutrients, and the total concentration of mercury were studied. According to the results of the granulometric distribution, silt-clay sediments predominate. The spatial distribution patterns of Hg were determined by the composition of the clays, organic carbon and total nitrogen showed a significant correlation (p < 0,05). The relationship between the total fraction of nutrients and their isotopic composition suggests a predominant contribution of sources of organic matter of marine origin in the Gulf of Guacanayabo. The values of Hg in the sediments, between 14,3-67,5 μg kg-1, do not represent a risk for marine organisms according to ecological criteria and the quality standards consulted.
