Some diatoms species of genus Pseudo-nitzschia produce toxins causing amnesic shellfish poisoning. In April 2009, a bloom of diatoms was observed in a semi enclosed area in Cienfuegos Bay, Cuba, the potentially toxic species Pseudo-nitzschia cf. multistriata was identified but not nocive effects in marine animals or humans were reported. The present paper describes the phytoplankton composition and concentration in the bloom area with emphasis in the species Pseudo-nitzschia cf. multistriata.
