Two research campaigns on board RV “Aldebaran” were conducted in February-March 2014, to the effects of assessing possible impacts of seismic prospection on the Uruguayan outer continental shelf on hydrobiological resources. Thirty sets were made at various distances from the seismic prospection vessel (2, 9, 17 and 25 nautical miles) to determine whether there were observable differences in abundance and diversity of fish with respect to the sound emitting source. The stomach contents of the most abundant species were analyzed to try to determine their feeding behaviour in relation to the seismic prospection activity. Continuous acoustical recordings were made and sampling stations for oceanographic information were made before each fishing set. The presence of sea birds and marine mammals in the area of study was analyzed. Results were not conclusive as to whether seismic prospection affects distribution and abundance in the biota under study but this may be due to the low number of sets and acoustical transects.
