Influence of temperature and salinity in the temporal and spatial distribution of blue crab (Callinectes sapidus, Rathbun, 1896) in Buenavista Bay, Cuba.Abstract
They were conducted oceanographic and biological-fishing surveys in Buenavista Bay, between years 2008 and 2010, in order to determine the effect of temperature and salinity in the temporal and spatial distribution of the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus). The greater catch and abundance of the species was recorded in lower temperature months (January to April), showing the seasonal variation in abundance a statistically significant inverse relationship (p < 0,05) with the water temperature. There was no seasonal relationship (p > 0,05) between abundance and salinity. Zonal differentiation by sex is determined with inverse relationship (r = –0,99; p < 0,05), as distribution of females and males. Males predominated in the eastern of the bay (higher temperature and salinity) and females west (lower temperature and salinity), which differs from other results related to the distribution by sex in C. sapidus that situate the females in areas of higher salinity, referring to estuarine areas, and males in areas less saline. In Buenavista bay, the blue crab population as exploited by two fishing companies, EPICAI and EPIVILA, because of administrative division of the fishing areas. EPICAI capture a higher percentage of females (> 97 %) which may affect the spawner stock and recruitment.
