Alternative Title
Microstructures of the otoliths of Baltic cod (Gadus morhua callarias L.) and European flounder (Platichthys flesus flesus L.)
Abstract
Microstructures of the otoliths sagitta of Baltic cod and European flounder from the North-Eastern Baltic were investigated using scanning electron microscope. The majority of the otolith microincrements (the first order increments) appeared to be 1—5 µm wide. In the zones of the highest otolith growth the width is about 10 µm. The width of the microincrements in the flounder otoliths varies in the 1-20 µm limits. The microincrements in the flounder otoliths are less regular than those of cod.
