Alternative Title
Stock-recruitment relationship of Panulirus argus under the effect of tropical cyclones in the Gulf of Batabanó, Cuba.
Abstract
Variations of spawning stock by themselves, fails to explain the recruitment process, so it is necessary to include external factors that could affect this. Tropical cyclones can affect this process by impact both on ocean habitats such as on the shelf. Therefore the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of cyclones in the stock-recruitment (S-R) relationship of spiny lobster in the gulf of Batabanó, Cuba. Using a virtual population analysis was estimated the number of lobsters with one year of age in the population (N1), the spawning stock (S) and the recruitment success. The power dissipation index of cyclones (PDI) was calculated. The Ricker classical model of S-R relationship and extended models, with PDI as external predictor with different lags, were fitted. The fits were compared using the second order Akaike information criterion (AICc) and the Akaike weights (w). Also the explained variance was calculated. The N1 has some variability over time with a marked decreasing trend. The PDI shows occasional basis with a tendency to increase. The cyclones affect the survival of the spiny lobster. Although the S-R models estimate a 58-59% of the variation in recruitment, none of them received enough support according to w. So it is concluded that the adjustment of the classical model does not improve significantly when PDI is included as an external factor affecting recruitment.
