Shebanova, M.A.; Kuznetsova, N.A.; Pushchina, O.I.; Bogachev, A.N.; Belousov, V.N.; Kornienko, G.G.; Boyko, N.E. (Azov Sea Research Fisheries Institute (AzNIIRKH), 2018)
In August–September 2017, the state of the plankton community was monitored in the western part of the Bering Sea and the adjacent waters of the Pacific Ocean in connection with the resumption of mass feeding migrations of salmonidae. The basis of zooplankton biomass in the period of research was a fraction of large individuals, 65–84 %; the fraction of small individuals amounted to 5–15 %, and of average-sized ones — to 11–20 %. The dominant groups in the large-sized fraction of zooplankton were copepods (Neocalanus plumchrus, Eucalanus bungii), chaetognatha (Sagitta elegans) and Coelenterata (Aglantha digitale). The total stock of plankton in the 50–0 m layer was 23.84 thousand tons, in the 200–0 m layer — 46.3 thousand tons. The high biomass of zooplankton in the investigated area indicates favorable conditions for feeding salmonidae.

In May 2018 we studied plankton and benthos in 25 water reservoirs and rivers of the Rostov region. The species composition and the development of the plankton and benthos communities are shown to be different depending on the type of a waterbody. The highest productivity of the hydrobiological communities was observed in gully ponds.
  • The pros and cons of Roshydromet state monitoring in the Veselovsky reservoir

Khoruzhaya, T.A.; Yunkina, S.O.; Bogachev, A.N.; Belousov, V.N.; Kornienko, G.G.; Boyko, N.E. (Azov Sea Research Fisheries Institute (AzNIIRKH), 2018)
As a result of the analysis of eco-toxicological state of Veselovsky reservoir on the basis of long-term information of the surface water-monitoring of Roshydromet on chemical and biological indicators of pollution and assessment of the adequacy of the information to detect changes of water system, a number of shortcomings in organization and carrying out of monitoring was identified for current period. Important shortcomings include the low categorization of observation points and, accordingly, of monitoring programs on hydrochemical (physical and chemical) and hydrobiological indicators. The situation deteriorates due to sharp reduction of the monitoring programs in the recent years, particularly hydrobiological (at the present time, only the parameters, pertaining to macrozoobenthos, are determined). Reliabilty of the information is limited by insufficiency of hydrological observations. Proposals for the development of the monitoring system in accordance with the current state of the Veselovsky Reservoir are given.

Reshetnyak, O.S.; Kondakova, M.Yu.; Kosmenko, L.S.; Bryzgalo, V.A.; Bogachev, A.N.; Belousov, V.N.; Kornienko, G.G.; Boyko, N.E. (Azov Sea Research Fisheries Institute (AzNIIRKH), 2018)
The variability of quantitative and qualitative parameters of phytoplankton communities in different parts of Lower Don was considered. It is shown that the characteristic feature of the development of phytoplankton for long period (1981–2011) was high variability of quantitative indicators, suggesting an unstable state of the community. In the phytoplankton species composition, from 7 to 82 species was recorded; the dominant ones were diatoms and green algae. Anthropogenic pressure on ecosystems in the lower reaches of the River Don can cause both eutrophic and toxic response from the community, accompanied by structural changes.

  • Characteristics of benthic communities of small and medium-sized rivers of Eastern Donbass in the area, affected by coal mining activity* (*Research was funded by the grant from Russian Science Foundation (Project No. 14-17-00376))

Reshetnyak, V.N.; Reshetnyak, O.S.; Bogachev, A.N.; Belousov, V.N.; Kornienko, G.G.; Boyko, N.E. (Azov Sea Research Fisheries Institute (AzNIIRKH), 2018)
The variability of quantitative and qualitative indices of the development of benthic communities in different parts of the small and medium rivers of the Eastern Donbass is considered. It is shown that the high variability of quantitative indices is a specific feature of the macrozoobenthos development, which indicates an unstable state of the community. The macrozoobenthos composition was comprised from 1 to 7 groups, and most often chironomidaes and oligochaetes prevailed. The influence of industrial mine drainage waters is manifested in an increase in the relative abundance of oligochaetes in the composition of the benthic fauna along with deterioration of the river water quality.

  • Features of formation of oxygen regime in the North-Eastern Black Sea

Kosenko, Yu.V.; Baskakova, T.E.; Bogachev, A.N.; Belousov, V.N.; Kornienko, G.G.; Boyko, N.E. (Azov Sea Research Fisheries Institute (AzNIIRKH), 2018)
The paper presents a long-term analysis of the seasonal dynamics of the formation of the oxygen regime in the North-Eastern part of the Black Sea for the period of 1996–2017. The studies were conducted in the deep and coastal areas in vertical sections. It is shown that in the early spring period the oxygen saturation of the deep and coastal waters of the Black Sea was relatively low. At deep-water stations, the absence of thermocline can lead to the formation of oxycline in the center of the cyclone vortex at depths up to 60 m. In spring, in the coastal and deep water areas, the photosynthesis layer is always above the thermocline at depths of up to 20 m with higher oxygen saturation in the coastal zone of the sea. In summer, phytoplankton biomass reaches its maximum in the deep and coastal waters of the Black Sea, the depth of the thermocline increases, the power of the photosynthetic layer is located above the thermocline and can reach 50 m. In the early-autumn period of the year, the lowering of deep waters was noted at the coastal and deep-water stations, the depth of thermocline reaches its maximum, and the intensity of photosynthesis, the most pronounced in the surface horizon, decreases. In the coastal part of the North-Eastern Black Sea, the influence of water circulation is observed on the horizons of more than 40 m with the release of deep oxygen-poor waters in the dynamic area of Anapa–Novorossiysk–Gelendzhik.
