First maturity size of stone crab, Menippe mercenaria (Say, 1818), in the Gulf of Batabano, CubaAbstract
The stone crab (Menippe mercenaria) in the Gulf of Batabano contributes 66.5 % of the national catch of this species, and its breeding is very important for the management plan. This catch was resumed in 1998, after a moratorium in 1995 due to a substantial decrease in the abundance of this species. The catch zone comprises from west of Cayamas to south of Pinar del Rio, occupying the northwestern portion of the Gulf of Batabano. Monthly samplings were conducted during the fishing seasons from 2009 to 2012 to determine the first maturity size and first catch size. All female sizes were considered; the carapace width (Ac) was measured in cm, and later adjusted to a logistic curve using Curve Expert 1.35 software. Spawned females were found in a range between 73 and 127 mm (Ac) with a first maturity size of 92 mm (Ac). The spawning season began in January, with a reproductive activity index (IAR) maximum in April, and low IAR values from October to December. The estimated first catch size (Lc= 50mm) was 92 mm, with a selection range between L 25%= 85 mm and L75% = 99 mm. At present, there is a legal minimum size of 90mm (Ac), according to the first maturity size, which corresponds to 70 mm in propode size. These findings are relevant for the management of the species.
