Morphological and sediment characterization of Cajio – Majaguebo coastal areaAbstract
Coastal stretches known as Cajio Beach and Majaguebo are located on the south coast of Güira de Melena municipality, Artemisa province. Although these coastlines have been previously studied, no updated information is available on their profile morphology and sediments. Given the role of both indicators in the behavior and evolution of any coastal area, this paper aims at characterizing the profile morphology and sediments in these study areas. To achieve this purpose, four topographic profiles were measured. Two perforations were conducted, collecting sediment samples in the different strata, and also four surface samples were taken. It was found that the major changes observed in the measured profiles occurred near the coast, but they do not constitute significant changes. Both sectors have gentle slopes. Each perforation has three strata, with different characteristics and thicknesses. Two of the collected surface samples are classified as mixed, of biogenic - terrigenous origin, and the other two as terrigenous.
