| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | The distribution of southern king crab Lithodes santolla, benthic crustacean that inhabits the Southwest Atlantic, begins in Uruguay and goes through Argentina and Chile. The species reproduces annually, females carry the eggs during 9-10 months and mate between November and December. Adult females molt annually, after spawning and prior to mating, adult males do it between May and July and the oldest specimens would have a two year intermold period. In Argentina four fish stocks can be defined. In the 60s, in the Beagle Channel, a fishery of great economic importance at a regional level was developed. In 1993, due to overfishing, a closed area in the traditional fishing ground was established; at present, only a small artisanal fleet operates in the outer zone. The stock of the northern continental shelf and slope, little known, has a reduced presence in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone. The southern Patagonian stock distributes along the Atlantic coast of the Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur provinces. The results of the surveys that began in the sector in 2013 show a large biological-fishery potential. The most important stock is found in the San Jorge Gulf and adjacent waters. The industrial fishing with traps, that started being developed in 2004 has, at present, four freezing vessels operating in the area. | en_US |
