Alternative Title
Spatial variability of temperature, salinity and transparency in the pelagic zone of the PNN Gorgona during September 2007 and March 2008.
Abstract
In order to describe the spatial and temporal variability of temperature, salinity and water column transparency, two oceanographic campaigns were carried out, the first one in September 2007 and the second one in March 2008, along 24 sampling station grid. Temperature and salinity in each station from surface to 50 m or bottom was registered using a Seabird-19 CTD, and the water column transparency was measured using a Secchi disk. Spatial and temporal significant differences of temperature, salinity and transparency were detected in the study area. In general terms, the water was warmer, less saline and more transparent during September than during March (Anova, p < 0.05). On the other hand, although no significant differences of surface temperature and salinity were detected among eastern and western side of the island isla (Anova, p > 0.13), at 10 m depth the water was warmer and more saline in the western than in the eastern side (Anova, p < 0.02).
