Environmental factors and sexual maturity of a Saccostrea palmula oyster bank (Carpenter, 1857) Mollusca, Bivalvia in Culebra Bay, Costa Rica.Abstract
Sexual maturity of oysters was evaluated during eight months (wet-dry season). The highest percentage of maturity occurred between August and September (rainy season), 49 % and 48 %, respectively. Increased chlorophyll a and precipitation were recorded since August, with peaks on September, 0,33 mg m-3 and 0,40 mm h-1, respectively. The increase of both generated a direct effect on oysters, increasing their sexual maturity percentage. During October an increased temperature up to 30,77 oC and a decreased salinity down to 29,5 ‰ were measured, yielding a drop in sexual maturity (7 %), probably associated with oyster spawning. A high linear correlation coefficient between sexual maturity and the eco-physiological condition index was determined for reproducers. Dissolved oxygen, salinity and sexual maturity had no significant difference among seasons, for chlorophyll a and precipitation between annual cycles (2014-2015). However, temperature evidenced significant difference among seasons.
