Alternative Title
General aspects of culture and genetics of Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931).
Abstract
Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei is recognized as one of the most cultured shrimp species due to its high yields and prices in the international market. It contributes in a 55 % to world production and around three million metric tons are harvested annually. Genetics is a relevant tool for increasing productivity and sustainability of aquaculture as an industry. Within this branch, DNA analysis molecular techniques have strengthened selection programs in many species, through two fundamental elements: selection assisted by molecular markers and establishment of pedigrees to avoid inbreeding in the selection processes. Several types of molecular markers have been used to analyze genetic parameters of wild and cultured populations. However, DNA microsatellites have quickly become a standard technique due to their high reproducibility, polymorphism and co-dominance characteristics. In order to reduce loss of genetic variability, it is important to establish progenitor banks with high levels of heterozygosity. In Cuba, studies have been carried out for the genetic characterization of populations of several shrimp species, many of which have been cultured and there have been five introductions of the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei.
