There was urgent need to secure safety transportation of emergency relief supplies to ports devastated by the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami. Immediately after the disaster, Japan Coast Guard dedicated all of the survey vessels, Shoyo, Takuyo, Meiyo, Tenyo and Kaiyo, to obstruction surveys in eleven important ports, and greatly contributed to quick re-opening of these affected ports.Journal
