Age determination of Baltic sprat with the help of otoliths.
Abstract
Baltic sprat otoliths are the most accessible and reliable recording structures used for age determination of this important commercial fish. When determining growth zones of Baltic sprat otoliths in usual or polarized light only relative differences in optical densities of adjacent zones and peculiarities of their morphology are taken into account. Opaque zones on otoliths are formed in summer - autumn and hyaline - in winter-spring periods. The distance from the centre of otolith to the first winter hyaline zone in dorsal-ventral direction is about 0.4 mm, from the first to the second winter hyaline zone - about 0.1 mm, from the second to the third - about 0.06 mm.
В статье обсуждается пригодность отолитов для определения возраста балтийского шпрота и вопрос распознавания зон роста отолитов. Подчеркивается относительность визуальных оценок оптической плотности зон роста отолитов. Устанавливается время формирования зон роста отолитов балтийского шпрота: опаковых – в летне-осенний, гиалиновых – в зимне-весенний период. Описывается техника определения возраста балтийского шпрота в проходящем обычном или поляризованном свете.
