Passive migrations of the Baltic sprat on the early stages of ontogenesis.Abstract
On the basis of long-term ichthyoplankton surveys carried out at 12 standard sections (1970-1978) from Bornholm area to the Gulf of Finland the ways of sprat passive migrations on early stages of development are traced for the first time. The main drift directions of eggs and larvae depending on the wind directions are determined. Mass eggs and larvae drift observed in May-July, i. e. within the period of an intensive sprat spawning in the surface layers. Mean length of sprat larvae increases from the south-west to the north east, and from the open sea area to the coastal one. The results of the investigations of the peculiarities in sprat eggs and larvae passive migrations allow revealing the areas of young fish settling and approach a question of prognosis population abundance by the sea areas.Journal
