dc.description.abstractIn 1975, the author tried to explain the large meander of the Kuroshio as a stationary Rossby wave using limited observed data obtained from comparatively shallow layers. Recalculation of the phase velocity of the Iarge meander of the Kuroshio by applying Haurwitz’s equation for barotropic Rossby waves with finite amplitude in the Kuroshio Current field, and using data from some deep sea serial observations conducted in the period of the large meander of the Kuroshio in 1975-1980, was carried out. It was reconfirmed that the large meander of the Kuroshio off Kisyu and Ensyu Nada may be regarded as a stationary barotropic Rossby wave with finite amplitude. The slow East-West movement of the large meander in this period is also explained as the motion of the Rossby wave.en_US
