In order to evidence the changes in the microalgae community due to the effect caused by the events "El Niño" and "La Niña", the CCCP has come studying from 1997 the distribution standars of the phytoplankton in ten sampling stations located to the interior of the Tumaco Bay, by means of the monthly monitoring; it s clear to corroborate the close relationship that exists between the population changes of diatoms and dinoflagellates (principal groups that compose to the phytoplankton) and the variations in physical-chemical parameters such as temperature, salinity and oxigen. From the beginning of the monitoring in february of 1997 has been registered a trend to the increase of the community as a rule, departing of abundance average of 284 cells/ml in 1997, being observed a notorius increase in the populations from second period of 1999 with an average of 1146 cells/ml, for finally to arrive to records that surpass 2500 cells/ml in 2000 (2022 cells/ml in average).Con el fin de evidenciar los cambios en la comunidad microalgal debidos al efecto causado por los eventos "El Niño" y "La Niña", el Centro Control Contaminación del Pacifico (CCCP) ha venido estudiando desde 1997 los patrones de distribución del fitoplancton en diez estaciones de muestreo ubicadas al interior de la Ensenada de Tumaco, por medio de la realización de monitoreos mensuales. Es notable comprobar la estrecha relación que existe entre los cambios poblacionales de diatomeas y dinoflagelados (principales grupos que componen al fitoplancton) y las variaciones en parámetros físicoquímicos tales como temperatura, salinidad, oxigeno y nutrientes. Desde el inicio del monitoreo en febrero de 1997 se ha registrado una tendencia al incremento de la comunidad en general, partiendo de abundancias promedio de 284 células/ ml en 1997, observándose un notorio incremento en la poblaciones a partir del segundo semestre de 1999 con un promedio de 1146 cel/ ml, para finalmente llegar a registros que superan las 3500 cel/ml en el 2000 (2022 cel/ ml en promedio.
