  • Composition and amino acid content of meal from some commercially less important fishes of Maharashtra

    Details are given of the yield and composition of dried waste from the filleting wastes of 3 commercially less utilized fish of the Maharashtra coast (Saurida tumbil, Caranx sexfasciatus and Sphyraena jello). The amino acid composition after acid hydrolysis is detailed for the three species.
  • A study on the fish fauna of Coorg District, Karnataka

    Some 35 species of fishes were collected from 57 localities spread in various taluks of Coorg district of Karnataka State. Four species of fishes which are rare and restricted to this region are recorded after a lapse of several years. A number of species of Puntius, namely, P. arulius arulius, P. arulius tamraparniei, P. pulchelus, P. micropogon , P. conchonius, P. vittatus, P. parrah, P. sarana, P. sophore, P. chola, P. denisonii were observed. Cold water species namely, Barilius bakerii, B. vagra vagra, B. gatensis, B. canarensis are recorded. Maximum number of species (13) were met in Ramthirtha stream at Poochkal.
  • A method of immersion of panels for ecological studies on marine fouling and boring organisms

    The importance of studies on the biology of marine foulers and borers needs no emphasis since they cause damage to submerged wooden structures resulting in considerable economic loss. In order to study their occurrence, settlement and to assess the rate of destruction to timber, several immersion techniques using iron racks, cages and rafts have been adopted. On the east and west coasts of India, at the Marine Centres of Forest Research Institute (Waltair, Madras, Cohin and Bombay) investigations have so far been carried out employing the first two methods.

  • Quality of cured fish on the west coast: comparative study with the IS specifications

    Moisture and salt content in cured fish products from various centres on the west coast of India are compared. The moisture contents varied in samples from different centres, whereas the salt content remained more or less uniform. The deviations from the Indian standard specification were highly significant in both cases. The high mean moisture values and low salt values with respect to accepted standards are indicative of the improper drying and poor salting.
  • Relative retentivity of knowledge in fish processing by fisherwomen

    Retention of knowledge in the preparation of fish pickle, fish wafers and fish soup powder for an experimental group of 20 fisherwomen selected from three fishing villages was studied. The knowledge retention immediately after exposure and also at intervals of 15 days and 30 days after exposure differed significantly.
  • A scale to measure the attitude towards improved fish processing methods

    An attitude scale was constructed to measure the attitude of fisherwomen towards improved fish processing methods. To construct the attitude scale, 'scale' and ‘Q’ values (the interquartile ranges) were calculated for 31 statements selected, based on the opinion of 34 judges. Based on the 'scale' and ‘Q’ values 16 statements were selected with eight favorable statements and eight unfavorable statements. The weightages given were 3, 2 and 1 for favorable statements and 1, 2 and 3 for unfavorable statements.
  • Inactivation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in drinking water

    A study was conducted in the Cochin area of India to determine the effect of drinking water on Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a bacterium that contaminates fish harvested from marine and estuarine environments. Times of fresh-water exposure required to inactivate these bacteria are given. Findings indicate that the washing of fish and equipment used to handle the fish in drinking water may decrease in the number of viable Vibrio cells and thus aid in prevention of food poisoning.
  • Influence of dietary proteins on cholesterol levels in albino rats

    Six groups of albino rats were fed identical diets, differing in their protein sources for sixty days. The protein sources used were fat free casein, defatted groundnut cake, and defatted fish powders from three species of fishes, namely, the fresh water fish Labeo rohita, the marine fishes, Rastrelliger kanagurta and Otolithus argenteus and marine prawns, Parapenaeopsis stylifera. After sixty days, the levels of cholesterol in the serum, liver and heart of the rats were estimated. The casein group recorded the highest level of cholesterol. Compared to casein, the groundnut protein was distinctly hypocholesterolemic. The fish proteins had a still greater cholesterol lowering ability. Of the proteins used in this study, the proteins of prawns had the maximum hypocholesterolemic effect. An attempt is made to correlate the behaviour of the proteins in this respect, with their respective amino acid compositions.
  • On the pattern of Salmonella serotypes in fishery products, froglegs and processing environments

    Thirty four different serotypes of Salmonella have been isolated from aquatic products. The number of serotypes from frozen froglegs were 22. Only four serotypes were isolated from frozen shrimps. S. weltevreden predominates in frozen shrimps and fish. S. roan and S. larochelle were isolated for the first time in India. Isolation of six rare serotypes of Salmonella has also been reported.
  • Reliability of Escherichia coli and faecal streptococci as indicators of Salmonella in frozen fishery products

    The results obtained in the present study suggest that Escherichia coli and faecal streptococci are of little value as indicators of the possible presence of Salmonella in frozen fishery products.
  • Preparation of mussel marinade

    A simple and cheap process for the preservation of mussel meat by marinading is described. The method involves blanching the mussel meat shucked from depurated live mussels in 3% boiling sodium chloride solution for 5 min followed by preserving it in a solution containing 3% acetic acid and 3% sodium chloride. The product stored in closed glass jars has a storage life of approximately 16 weeks at room temperature (23-30°C), after which the quality began to deteriorate. Texture of the meat is least affected and closely resembles that of the fresh meat.
  • Fish sauce from two species of unexploited deep sea fish Peristedion adeni and Peristedion weberi

    Two species of unexploited deep sea fish Peristedion adeni and Peristedion weberi caught from the Exclusive Economic Zone of India were subjected to fermentation at ambient temperature (30 ± 2°C) in the presence of salt in 4:1 ratio. Periodical analysis of the fermented product was carried out up to one year. The sauces had brownish yellow colour and conformed to special grade of the standards prescribed by the Food and Drug Administration. Further solubilization of protein after 9 month's maturation was not appreciable.
  • Quality of dry fish from markets in Andhra Pradesh

    Dry fish samples were procured from different fish markets and subjected to biochemical and bacteriological evaluation for assessing quality. The quality of market samples was compared with the samples dried in laboratory and in the mechanical drier [sic]. Most of the market samples had high moisture and sand contents. TVN values of market samples were high showing poor quality of the finished product.
  • Studies on canning Psenopsis cyanea

    Suitability of Psenopsis cyanea, a deep sea fish caught on board FORV Sagar Sampada from a depth of 350m off Cochin for processing into canned product was studied. The fish having high fat content around 52% (DWB) and white attractive meat renders itself well for canning yielding a product good in organoleptic characteristics. However to have a presentable appearance to the product the fish has to be skinned prior to canning. Gentle agitation of P. cyanea in 0.25% aqueous solution of lactic acid at ambient temperature for 15 min followed by thorough washing yields skinless fish. Fish suffers around 8% (DWB) fat loss during skinning. Fish canned in natural style and in brine have better organoleptic characteristics initially. On storage they develop slight rancidity. Fish canned in oil maintains the characteristics over a longer period.

  • Selection of materials for marine instruments

    The paper describes the selection of materials for the reliable operation of oceanographic instruments. For selecting the material, raft immersion tests were carried out for one year. Results of the tests are presented. Comparisons between metals were discussed.
  • Delayed freezing on the quality and shelf-life of Kalawa (Epinephelus spp.)

    Kalawa (Epinephelus spp.) caught on board FORV Sagar Sampada was frozen in the absolutely fresh condition as well as after keeping for 5 and 10h at ambient temperature. Evaluation of changes in the quality of these samples during storage at -20°C indicated appreciable difference between the fresh frozen and delayed frozen fish during the initial stages of storage. Fresh frozen and 5h delayed froze fish samples had a shelf-life of more than 62 weeks, whereas the 10h delayed frozen fish had a shelf-life of about 48 weeks.
  • On the optimum mesh size for the capture of Barbus tor (Hamilton)

    Results of mesh selectivity experiments on B. tor are presented in this paper. Selectivity curve on the basis of maximum girth of fish in relation to perimeter of mesh was worked out. The optimum girth/mesh perimeter ratio was found to be 1.31. A linear regression of G+0.445L=12.8 was fitted for conversion of length to girth.
  • Performance of 25m large mesh demersal trawl off Veraval, north west coast of India

    Performance of a 25m large mesh demersal trawl, with 150mm mesh size in the fore parts of the trawl was evaluated in comparison with one boat high opening trawl of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) with 360 meshes of 160mm mesh size and 25.6m head rope length. An 8.2% increase in catch was obtained by 25m large mesh demersal trawl. The gear is comparatively cheaper, lighter in construction and offered better horizontal spread with significantly lower towing resistance. Commercial suitability of the gear for efficient harvesting of demersal fish resources of the region is discussed.
