  • IOC-JODC Training Course on Oceanographic Data Management: Japan Oceanographic Data Centre Hydrographic Department Maritime Safety Agency Tokyo, Japan 26 September - 7 October 1994

    The Training Course on Oceanographic Data Management has been organized every year since 1982 at the Japan Oceanographic Data Center (JODC), in support of the activities of IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC). The thirteenth training course was organized by JODC under the auspices of IOC from 26 September to 7 October 1994, at JODC, Hydrographic Department, Maritime Safety Agency, Tokyo, Japan. The objectives of the training course were to provide personnel currently involved in oceanographic data and information management from Member States of the WESTPAC region with basic concepts of the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) system and its function, especially in the WESTPAC region, and acquisition, procession and compilation of oceanographic data.
  • ODINAFRICA II Remedial Training Course in Marine Data Management (Data Short Course), Accra, Ghana 14-18 April 2003.

    A special workshop has been held in Accra, Ghana from 14-18 April 2003 as part of the ODINAFRICAII program for ocean data management. This report describes the content and accomplishments of that special workshop. The workshop programme was based on the IOC OceanTeacher capacity building tool - an extensive collation of documents on marine data, formats, software, program and data management procedures, manuals, protocols, and associated tutorials. A set of intersessional assignments was formulated that included a wide range of specific dataset measures and products that will be assigned regularly through the recently established ODINAFRICA.net communication network.

    The IODE Training Course in Ocean Data Management for the Caspian and Black Sea Regions was held in Tehran, I.R. Iran between 20 and 30 October 2002, hosted by the Iranian National Center for Oceanography (INCO). The workshop was attended by students from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine. Lectures were provided by resource persons from the Islamic Republic of Iran and the IOC. The workshop programme was based on the IOC OceanTeacher capacity building tool - an extensive collation of documents on marine data, formats, software, program and data management procedures, manuals, protocols, and associated tutorials.
  • Second ODINAFRICA-II Training Course in Marine Data Management, Tunis, Tunisia April 29 – May 10, 2002.

    The Second ODINAFRICA Training Course in Marine Data Management was held in Tunis, Tunisia between 29 April and 10 May 2002, and was organised by the Institut National des Sciences et Technologies de la Mer (INSTM). It was held simultaneously with the ODINAFRICA II Marine Information Management Training Course, and the last session of both workshops was a joint activity to foster coordination between the groups. The workshop was attended by students from 18 countries of the IOCINCWIO and IOCEA Regions. Lectures were provided by invited resource persons from the United States of America and the IOC. The workshop programme was based on the IOC OceanTeacher capacity building tool - an extensive collation of documents on marine data, formats, software, program and data management procedures, manuals, protocols, and associated tutorials. A set of intersessional assignments was formulated that included a wide range of specific dataset measures and products that will be assigned regularly through the recently-established ODINAFRICA.net communication network.

    First ODINAFRICA II Training Workshop in Marine Data Management was held in Casablanca, Morocco, April 2-13, 2001. Subsequent to the Casablanca workshop, the nation of Cote d’Ivoire has joined the ODINAFRICA program, and in order to bring the Ivorienne student up-to-date with the materials and training experience already provided in 2001, a special workshop has been held in Abidjan from March 21-29, 2002, hosted by the Centre des Recherches Oceanographiques (CRO). This report describes the content and accomplishments of that special workshop. The workshop programme was based on the IOC OceanTeacher capacity building tool - an extensive collation of documents on marine data, formats, software, program and data management procedures, manuals, protocols, and associated tutorials. A set of intersessional assignments was formulated that included a wide range of specific dataset measures and products that will be assigned regularly through the recently-established ODINAFRICA.net communication network.

    The First ODINCARSA Training Course in Marine Data Management was held in Guayaquil, Ecuador between 20 and 31 May 2002, hosted by the Instituto Oceanográfico de la Armada del Ecuador (INOCAR). The workshop was attended by students from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominica, Ecuador, México, Panama and Perú. Lectures were provided by invited resource persons from the United States of America and the IOC. The workshop programme was based on the IOC OceanTeacher capacity building tool - an extensive collation of documents on marine data, formats, software, program and data management procedures, manuals, protocols, and associated tutorials. The workshop participants formulated a set intersessional goals and assignments to be accomplished before the second session in this curriculum.
  • Second ODINCARSA Training Course in Marine Data Management, organised in cooperation with: Centro de Investigaciones Oceanográficas e Hidrográphicas Cartagena, Colombia 13-17 October, 2003.

    The Second ODINCARSA Training Course in Marine Data Management was held in Cartagena, Colombia between 13 and 17 October 2003, hosted by the Centro de Investigaciones Oceanográficas e Hidrogáficas (CIOH). The course was attended by students from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador and Perú. The key objective of the training course was to establish a core group of trained data management instructors with the ability to teach the OceanTeacher system. A total of nine data managers were certified to provide future training for the ODINCARSA region. Four instructors were identified who could provide the training in both Spanish and English. The group discussed additional training material that could be included in OceanTeacher and agreed to provide a Spanish translation of OceanTeacher.

    The First ODINAFRICA II Training Workshop in Marine Data Management was held in Casablanca, Morocco, April 2-13, 2001, attended by students from ten western African nations and one eastern African nation. ODINAFRICA is a data and information project working towards establishing a lasting network of marine and aquatic institutes in Africa. Its headquarters is located at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) in Mombasa, Kenya. Through its information services to the scientific community, the project aims at promoting the scientific capabilities of this continent. The objectives of the ODINAFRICA project are as follows: a) Provide marine scientists in Africa with the necessary bibliographic and scientific literature b) Make full use of the scientific literature available in Africa c) Promote and facilitate communication between marine scientists in Africa d) Promote and facilitate communication in Africa and other regions e) Promote the scientific activities of the marine and coastal scientists within and outside Africa f) Provide scientific information, and equipment, software and training to make full use of this information Under the leadership of the IOC, and with funding generously provided by the government of Flanders, the workshop was designed to address the final objective listed above. The workshop was organized locally in Casablanca by Dr. Maria Snoussi of the Université Mohammed V, Faculté des Sciences, Département Sciences de la Terre, Rabat, Morocco.
  • ODINAFRICA II Training Course in Marine Data Management for Mozambique, Maputo, Mozambique 11-22 August 2003.

    The ODINAFRICA-II Training Course in Marine Data Management was held in Maputo, Mozambique between 11 and 22 August 2003, and was organised by the Instituto Nacional de Hidrografia e Navegaçao (INAHINA). The workshop was attended by 10 students from marine institutions in Mozambique. Lectures were provided by invited resource persons from the USA and the IOC. The workshop programme was based on the IOC OceanTeacher capacity building tool - an extensive collation of documents on marine data, formats, software, program and data management procedures, manuals, protocols, and associated tutorials.
  • First ODINCARSA Training Course in Marine Information Management : hosted by the Unidad Académica Mazatlán del Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnologia, U.N.A.M. Mazatlan, Mexico 29 September – 4 October 2002.

    The First ODINCARSA Training Course in Marine Information Management was held in Mazatlan, Mexico, kindly hosted by the ‘Unidad Académica Mazatlán del Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnologia, U.N.A.M.’. The Training Course was attended by 17 participants from 13 countries including Argentina, The Bahamas, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Saint Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago. Resource persons included Mrs Jane Barnwell, Mrs. Amelia Chavez Comparán, Mrs. Guillermina Cosulich, Mrs. Linda Pikula, Mrs. Maria Clara Ramirez Jáuregui, Mrs. Pauline Simpson, Mr. Steve Watkins and Mr. Peter Pissierssens. The course included theoretical lectures on Information Management as well as discussions on an ODINCARSA marine information management workplan for 2002/2003. The course used the OceanTeacher system.
  • IODE Training on Oceanographic Data and Information Management for the Spanish-Speaking Countries of Central and South America, Fundação Universidade Federal de Rio Grande Rio Grande, RS, Brasil 20-29 September 1999.

    IOC for UNESCO (UNESCO, 2000)
    IOC and IODE have since long recognised the need for training courses, aimed at promoting knowledge on adequate management of marine and coastal data and at sharing the experience in this field between the countries involved. A first course of this type for the region was held in 1991 in Bogota, Colombia (IOC Training Course Report 14). It had as its main goals the promotion of methodologies and technologies for the management of marine data and information in National Oceanographic Data Centres, as well as the promotion of the system for International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange, IODE of IOC. The training workshop in Rio Grande was the second opportunity of this type for the countries of the region.
  • IOC/IODE - NIO Training Course on Oceanographic Data and Information Management, National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, India 17-27 October 1998.

    IOC for IODE (UNESCO, 1999)
    During the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) Officers, held in Goa, India between 10 and 13 February 1998, the National Institute of Oceanography offered to host a regional data management training course for countries in the IOCINDIO (IOC Regional Committee for the Central Indian Ocean ) region. Responding to this kind offer the IOC was able to allocate funds for supporting travel and accommodation for participants and international resource persons. NIO offered to cover local organizational expenses and travel and accommodation expenses for local resource persons. The objectives of the Training Course were: to provide an introduction to, and raise awareness for, the IODE Programme to familiarize participants with IODE projects and products to provide participants with basic knowledge and experience about data management systems and their utilization in oceanographic data, metadata and information management to provide participants with basic knowledge about new technologies related to serving users with information and data over the Internet to stimulate intra-regional collaboration in the field of oceanographic data and information management to provide training to recently established National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODC) and Designated National Agencies (DNA) to stimulate countries in the region to establish National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODC) or Designated National Agencies (DNA) The Course was also used as a second occasion to receive comments and recommendations on the IODE Resource Kit through the draft product !ODINEA CD-ROM which was developed during the IOC Regional Training Course in Oceanographic Data Management for the IOCINCWIO region , held in Mombasa, Kenya (1-11December 1997). On the basis of the collected comments and recommendation a comprehensive training tool will be developed to be used during (and after) IODE training courses to ensure long-term impact of IODE training activities.
  • First ODINAFRICA-II Training Course in Marine Information Management, Cape Town, South Africa 29 October – 9 November 2001.

    IOC for UNESCO (UNESCO, 2001)
    The First ODINAFRICA Training Course on Marine Information Management was held in Cape Town, South Africa, kindly hosted by Marine and Coastal Management at the Research Aquarium, Sea Point. Seventeen out of twenty ODINAFRICA countries were ale to send a participant. The course included theoretical lectures on Information Management as well as a practical hands-on course on the use of the Integrated Library Management System (ILMS) INMAGIC for Libraries which was identified by the IODE Steering Group for the Resource Kit (Miami, March 2001) as a suitable software for this purpose. Discussions were also held on the results of an institutional survey filled by the participants during the course.
  • Training Course on Management of Marine Data and Information for the IOCINCWIO Region: Organized in cooperation with: Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute Mombasa, Kenya 1 - 11 December 1997.

    The Training Course on Management of Marine Data and Information for the IOCINCWIO Region was held in Mombasa, Kenya, from 1 to 11 December, 1997. The Course was organized in cooperation with and kindly hosted by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, Mombasa. The course was designed within the continuing training programme of the IODE to familiarize marine data and information managers with current procedures and methods related to marine data and information management, with a special emphasis on newest microcomputer methods and software. Through such training courses the IOC aims to ensure increasing and sustained collaboration of Member States in the IODE programme, and to maintain a high level of competence in the National Oceanographic Data Centres.
  • Third IOC/WESTPAC Training Course on NEAR-GOOS Data Management, Japan Oceanographic Data Centre Hydrographic Department Maritime Safety Agency Tokyo, Japan 24 January - 4 February 2000.

    IOC for UNESCO (UNESCO, 2000)
    This report presents a summary of the Third IOC/WESTPAC Training Course on NEAR-GOOS Data Management, which was organized by the Japan Oceanographic Data Center (JODC) under the auspices of IOC from 24 January to 4 February 2000 at the JODC, Tokyo, Japan. Five participants from China, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation and Vietnam were selected by the IOC and the JODC, and many lectures were given on the following: the concept of NEAR-GOOS and its function in the WESTPAC region; The framework of the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) programme; Processing and management on various marine data and information, etc., and also country reports were presented by the five participants regarding the data management and the state-of-the-art in the field of marine observation in their countries.
  • IOC-ICSU-IAEA-EU Training Course on Marine Geological and Geophysical Data Management for the Countries of the Black and Caspian Seas Regions, World Data Centre B, Marine Geology and Geophysics, Russian Federation, 8-19 September 1997.

    The purpose of the Training Course was to train participants in modern methods and technologies of marine geological and geophysical data collection, processing and usage, to make them acquainted with the main principles of international exchange of data and information and show them the creation of ocean databases.
  • Training Course on Management of Marine Data and Information for the Mediterranean Region, Organized in cooperation with: Malta Council for Science and Technology; Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Insular Coastal Dynamics CEC-MAST, Malta, 10-21 April 1995.

    IOC for UNESCO (UNESCO, 1995)
    The course frames within the continuing training programme of the IODE to familiarize marine data and information managers with current procedures and methods related to marine data and information management. Through such training courses the IOC aims to ensure increasing and sustained collaboration of Member States in the IODE programme, and to maintain a high level of competence in the National Oceanographic Data Centres.
  • IOC Training Course on Oceanographic Data Management for Black Sea Countries, Obnisk, Russian Federation, 1-12 August 1994.

    IOC for UNESCO (UNESCO, 1994)
    The objective of the Training Course was to develop facilities of the Black Sea countries for oceanographic data acquisition, management and processing, using modem methods, technologies and software, and make participants acquainted with the IODE methods, tools and mechanics (GF3, OceanPC and other means). This Training Course was the second organized in the Russian Federation under the auspices of the National Oceanographic Data Centre. The first Training Course in 1990 was dedicated to the GF-3 Formatting System. The programme of the present Training Course was much wider and covered practically all aspects of data management - from the methods of data collection to the methods of producing climatic characteristics and other products.
