El objeto de obtener información mensual de las características Físico-Químico-Biológicas de la columna de agua y establecer las condiciones oceanográficas de la zona durante los años en que no se presenta el evento y, en base de éstas, detectar los cambios o variaciones que se producen cuando aparece un proceso de esta naturaleza, a fin de, eventualmente, coadyuvar a la realización de predicciones, a corto o mediano plazo de la aparición de "EL NIÑO".A qualitative study of the different water masses determined on the research zones by using the analysis of the status variables, such as salinity and temperature during 1990-1993, as well as their chemical characteristics and their variations in relation with "EL NIÑO" phenomena, is presented. It's established that on 1990, which is considered as a normal year, presence of Surface Tropical Waters (ATS), is not detedted, but predominance of Surface Equatorial Waters (AES) and Peruvian Coastal Waters (ACP) is observed. In 1991, before EL NIÑO" year, there was an incidence of ATS on surface layer during winter season which intensified during 1992 and continues until 1993. Similar conditions as in 1990, were observed in 1994. For this reason this year is considered as a normal year. In 1995, from January to October, predominance of AES and ACP were also observed. About chemical aspects, higher concentrations of dissolved oxygen on ATS than on AES and ACP is observed, while inorganic nutrients increase in that sense.
