A small colony of the South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens) from Perú has established since 1997 at Punta Brava, Salinas (2° 12'S, 81°00' W). Two visits were carried out during 2002 to the site: in july 20th 12 animals were found, and in october 13th around 30. The animals use a platform in the northern side of a rock located 50m off shore for resting. Although no data on population structure and dynamic is available, the colony would be formed by males of different age-classes whose members would change continuously. This is the northernmost reported colony of this species along its entire distribution range on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America. A monitoring of this colony would increase our knowledge about the presence of this species in Ecuadorian waters.
