Abstract
From july through september 1995, 15 trips were made aboard tourist boats traveling between Puerto López and La Plata island to study humpback whales. A total of 102 whales in 45 groups were sighted. Groups were formed by 1 to 5 individuals (X=2.26, SD=0.95). The composition of age classes was estimated for 16 groups: 8 consisted only of adults (X=2.25, SD=0.82), 4 were formed by adults and subadults (X=2.75, SD=0.82), 3 groups by adults and calves (X=2.33, SD=047) and once a single subadult was observed. The crude birth rate was 0.029. Thirty one individuals were identified by the color pattern on their ventral flukes, increasing the number of identified whales in the area to 72. Despite this fact, so far not one resighting has been made, which indicate that such a number is just a small part of the population. Three humpback whales were found stranded on the continental coast during this season, including a 6-meter-long calf and another stranding caused by the interaction with a type of industrial net.
