Abstract
During the past five years the Government of Uruguay through its National Fisheries Institute (INAPE), and with the assistance of FAO has carried out a Fisheries Development Programm. Based in a better knowledge of its fisheries resources the Uruguayan Fishing Industry has grown considerably, as exemplified by the increase in the annual catches from 26.000 MT (1975) to 108.000 MT (1979. In spite of this growth Uruguay still has fishery resources like the squids which remain underexploited. The 1980 research programm of INAPE therefore included an integral study of the squid exploitation as a first step towards the development of a squid fishery. This paper presents the results of a study on production and marketing of squid in Uruguay. It is one of three technical reports on the topic written by the author. The other two reports cover fishery technology and biological aspects, respectiveJy.
