Interview data, length frequency data and species composition for the Gulf of Guayaquil between 1974 and 1985 were examined. The data indicates a long term decline in landings of some 1,000 mt. The species most affected is Penaeus occidentalis which has shown an overall decline in landings. Landing Penaeus vannamei have increased in over the same period. It is not clear wether the decline in catches during 1984 and 1985 was due adverse enviromental conditions or overfishing by the fleet and postlarval.en
