Evolution of bacteriological quality of east beaches during lasted years (2005-2009)
Abstract
In this paper we study the bacteriological quality of beaches at east of the Bay of Havana in rainy and little rainy periods in 2009, through the identification of microbial indicators of fecal contamination such as: termotolerant coliforms and fecal streptococcus. Besides, we compared the annual geometric averages concentrations of such indicators with those obtained in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Results obtained reflect that there are not high differences in termotolerant coliforms and fecal streptococcus levels in rainy and little rainy periods during 2009. The most affected station is the point located between 496 and 494 streets in Guanabo beach. The concentrations of termotolerant coliforms and fecal 1 streptococcus detected were higher than maximum limit established in Cuban Standard. In both cases the highest level was found in the rainy period. The comparison with previous years reflects an improvement in the quality of water in these beaches since the concentrations of the two indicators show a notable decrease in all sampled stations.
