Geomorphology of Point Fort William, Greenwich Island, south Shetland, Antarctica
Abstract
Correlating the topographc characteristics, the geodynamical processes than had shaped the landscape, and the lithology at Point Fort William, seven geomorphologic unities had been identified. The rock bodies that isolately appear in the sector and that are remanents from the glacial and marine erosion, form the first unit named rocky promontories. The second unit is formed by the deposits of present beach and by the paleo-beaches that had been taken away from the coast line by the process of uplift that affects the south Shetland Islands. Other units as glaciolacustrine deposits, pluvioglacier zones, present zones of marine abrasion, and the sectors occupied by glaciers had been observed. For each of these unities, the dominant geomorphological processes are identified.
