Effects of the harvest of the leaves of Thalassia testudinum K. D. Koenig at Rincón de Guanabo, CubaAbstract
Thalassia testudinum leaves can be rich source of natural antioxidants with potential in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries applications. Harvesting its leaves for these purposes must be done in a sustainable manner for the preservation of the ecological goods and services they provides. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects that different cutting frequencies on the species at Rincón de Guanabo, Cuba. The effect of the continuous pruning of the leaves, every 60, 90 and 120 days, on the vegetative and reproductive structures and the content of soluble carbohydrates and proteins in the plant were analyzed on permanent plots. The four monthly harvesting, with the use of scissors, cutting 5 cm above the sediment and in areas of 0.25 m2, did not cause damage to the vegetative and reproductive structures, and there were no changes in the chemical components of the plant.
