Catches of tuna larvae obtained by surface and double oblique hauls using the Neuston and the Trapeze nets respectively in the Gulf of Mexico, are compared. Day and night time hauling operations within 0-200 m depth were made to establish the probable vertical distribution of larvae and, at the same time, to study comparatively these two types.of nets. The results obtained prove that Neuston net is capable of catching a higher number of larvae than the Trapeze net does, irrespective of the time of day and shows ¿Iso s ign if icant differences when; the results obtained with the same type of net during the day- and night periods are compared. It is concluded that the diurnal vertical migration showed by larval tuna favours the uppermost surface layer during daylight, moving away, however, during the-darkness although not completely.
