Does the breeding of sea turtles generate anomalous migratory patterns when they are released into the natural environment?.Abstract
Among the contradictory aspects of captive breeding of sea turtles, for a certain time, there has been the question of whether they are capable of carrying out their migrations, with the same efficiency as wild turtles, when they are released into the natural environment. This work presents information on movements of turtles from two hatcheries, in the southwestern region of Cuba. The study was based on mark-recapture data from seven juvenile-stage released turtles (four green turtles, two loggerheads, and one hawksbill) and one satellite-tracked loggerhead, also a juvenile. The results indicated that captive-bred turtles have the ability to survive in the wild. The studied turtles were recaptured in coastal areas in different regions. In addition, similar displacements were observed in individuals of the same species.
