Feeding of young herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) in the Gulf of Riga (Baltic Sea) is described. The problems concerning the changes in feeding during the two first years of life, the analysis of the impact of the food basis and the thermal regime on the feeding intensity and the weight and fatness of the fish are discussed. Copepods are the main food of young herring in the Gulf of Riga. Eurytemora hirundoides has the highest importance in food by weight, it is consumed chiefly by smaller specimen. In addition to copepods, young herring feeds on mysids and amphipods. The food items vary by seasons and depend on the length of fish.
