The shallow water shrimp at Sofala Bank represents an important source of foreign exchange for Mozambique. The status of knowledge on the fishery is sparse in the literature including mainly internal reports. This work compiled data and information previously reported on the shrimp fishery and stock, since the beginning of the commercial fishery up to date. It includes a fishery description, the evolution of the fishing effort, landings and catch rates. The main historical management measures implemented in the fishery are also described, which includes the licencing regime, minimum mesh size requirements, closed seasons and total allowable catch. The metodologies used for stock assessment and the list of surveys carried out for monitoring purposes in the fishery since 1982 are also presented. The research initiatives as well as the challenges faced by research, management institutions and the fishing industry to achieve a bioeconomic sustainable fishery are discussed.en
