A fishery and stock assessment of Hilsa kelee (kelee shad) in Maputo bay was carried out in January 2011. To assess the status of the stock and the fishery two types of models were applied, a dynamic production model based on the Schaefer logistic model, fitted to estimates of annual total catch and abundance indices, a length cohort analysis and a yield per recruit model for lengths with fishery dependent data series of the period 1992-2010. The highest levels of fishing effort were recorded in 2007 and the lowest in 2009. The total annual catch estimated for the period 2006 to 2010 is below 3,000 t/year. The lowest estimated value, of around 1,100 t, was observed in 2009. CPUEs show the lowest level in 2007 (119 kg per fishing day), with a recovery by 2010 (228 kg per fishing day). The average size of the fish have been suffering a very marked reduction during the last decade, since the average weight of the individuals landed in 2010 was only 60% of that of the fish landed in 2001. The production model indicates that the biomass (Bcur) in 2010 was below the biomass that produces the maximum sustainable yield (BMSY). Current fishing mortality (Fcur), is approximately at the level of the fishing mortality that is sustainable by the current biomass levels. A Length Cohort Analysis (LCA) over the past three years indicates a concentration of fishing mortality in the length classes from 17 to 21 cm. However, the analysis showed also a fishing mortality of juveniles considerably higher than that stimated for the period 2003-2005.The yield-per-recruit analysis indicates that with the current exploitation pattern, the stock of magumba (kelee shad) in Maputo Bay is heavily exploited, with a fishing mortality level above of target reference point F0.1 but below the limit reference point FMax. which also coincides with the observations derived from trends in the simple fishery indicators, as the CPUE, the average weight of individuals captured and length composition of catches. It is recommended that the fishing effort should not increase over the next two years, closely monitoring the number and size of netting used and control the size of the mesh used, a reduction of the mesh size could lead the fishery to a situation of overexploitating the stock.en
