The number of purse seiners active in the Western Indian Ocean during the third quarter of 1988 increased from 38 at the end of the second quarter to 43 in July, reaching a maximum of 46 in September. This represents a considerable increase in the number of active vessels compared to the same period last year when a maximum of 38 vessels were in operation in September. Overall catch rates increased from 19 MT/day during the second quarter of 1988 to 25 MT/day during this quarter, reaching the same level as in the previous year. The proportion of yellow fin dropped from 53% in July to 17% in September with a corresponding increase in skipjack catches. This fishing pattern follows the same trend set in previous years, as vessels fished around the Equator north of the Seychelles EEZ. As determined from logbooks received by the 30th September 1988, the cumulative catch by purse seiners operating in the Western Indian Ocean for 1988 now amounts to 137,452 tones.Pages
