dc.description.abstractLas tortugas marinas son especies amenazadas de extinción y están incluidas en el Apéndice I de CITES. A pesar de esto, Cuba ha sido una de las naciones que ha defendido la pesquería sostenible de este recurso, estableciendo la talla mínima de pesquería en 65 cm. La sostenibilidad estaba basada en el criterio de que en aguas cubanas la madurez sexual se alcanza de forma temprana y el crecimiento de los individuos es más acelerado. Adicionalmente, el número de individuos y las tallas de capturas se mantenían constantes en el tiempo. A pesar de que se tienen numerosos registros en relación a la talla, el sexo y la presencia/ ausencia de “huevos en ramas” o folículos ováricos agrandados, en la práctica, estas variables no permiten informar sobre los diferentes momentos del ciclo de vida del individuo. Esto implica que la información sobre el estado reproductor de los individuos y su relación con la talla sea imprecisa y por tanto, el verdadero impacto de esta pesquería en las poblaciones regionales se desconozca. Por tanto, se propone determinar la relación entre el estado de maduración y la talla en los individuos de Chelonia mydas y Eretmochelys imbricata del agregado pesquero legal del Archipiélago Jardines del Rey, empleando el análisis macro y microscópico de los órganos reproductores. Las hembras superaron en número a los machos. Se describen histoquímicamente los estadios de foliculogénesis en estas especies en comparación con Alligator misssissipiensis (Crocodilia) y Anolis porcatus (Squamata). La foliculogénesis en tortugas marinas presentó semejanzas morfológicas con el aligátor y bioquímicas con el resto de los reptiles, en los cuales el ovocito vitelogénico manifiesta crecimiento por acumulación de precursores de vitelo de naturaleza glicoproteica y lipídica en forma de plaquetas o glóbulos. La mayoría de los individuos de C. mydas y E. imbricata que se capturaron en el archipiélago Jardines del Rey superaron la talla mínima de pesquería (65 cm), pero resultaron vírgenes e inmaduros sexualmente, lo cual apunta a una insostenibilidad de estos recursos. Se encontraron pocas hembras pubescentes y los machos, aunque no tenían desarrollado el pene, presentaron túbulos seminíferos con actividad espermatogénica, lo cual indica que estaban próximos a alcanzar la madurez sexual. La mayoría de las hembras de C. mydas y E. imbricata capturadas, se distribuye en las clases de talla III-IV y II-III respectivamente, lo cual evidencia una inversión temporal del comportamiento del LRC para E. imbricata, y refleja la tendencia a disminuir el tamaño medio de la captura, de presentarse en alto porcentaje individuos inmadurosen
