Abstract

IOC and IODE have since long recognised the need for training courses, aimed at promoting knowledge on adequate management of marine and coastal data and at sharing the experience in this field between the countries involved. A first course of this type for the region was held in 1991 in Bogota, Colombia (IOC Training Course Report 14). It had as its main goals the promotion of methodologies and technologies for the management of marine data and information in National Oceanographic Data Centres, as well as the promotion of the system for International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange, IODE of IOC. The training workshop in Rio Grande was the second opportunity of this type for the countries of the region.
