dc.description.abstractSe estudió la población del manatí antillano (Trichechus manatus) presente en la Ensenada de la Siguanea. Se colectó información acerca de los avistamientos de la especie, tamaño de los grupos, conductas, composición de la dieta y amenazas potenciales. Además se realizó la caracterización de sushábitats principales. Se utilizaron diversas metodologías que incluyeron muestreos en botes, a partir de recorridos y desde estaciones fijas, colecta e identificación de especies vegetales, colecta y análisis de material fecal y entrevistas a pescadores. Se determinó que la zona de estudio presenta un conjunto de características adecuadas para la supervivencia de la especie, como disponibilidad de alimento, temperatura del agua apropiada, fuentes de agua dulce, potencialidad de refugios y bajo disturbio antrópico. Se realizaron 36 avistamientos de manatíes que totalizaron 59 animales. Todos los avistamientos se detectaron en el área correspondiente a las lagunas y canales, no se observaron animales en la zona correspondiente a la costa y cayos. El valor promedio del tamaño de grupo fue 1.6 y se observaron grupos de hasta5 animales. Se pudo detectar la conducta solamente en el 50 % de los avistamientos, se observó frecuentemente un comportamiento evasivo de los animales ante la presencia de la embarcación. El componente vegetal dominante en la dieta de los animales fue la especie Halodule wrightii. A partir de los resultados obtenidos y bajo el marco legal correspondiente, se realizaron recomendaciones para la conservación de la especie en el área.es
