This investigation shows the effects of event ENOS 1997-1998 on the Sea Superficial Temperature (SST) and the abundance of larvae of fish of the families Thunnidae, Carangidae and Lutjanidae in oceanic waters adjacent to Cuba. Historical data consists of 37 oceanographic cruises, which taked place from 1966 to 1999. Some data come from three oceanographic cruises carried out under ENSO 1997-1998 in December 1997, September 1998 and May 1999. The SST series developed in NOAA’s National Meteorological Center for Cuba’s grid 23º-24ºN and 74º-85ºW between 1966 and 2000 was also used. Thermal SST anomalies, during September 1998, caused an increase in both the space distribution and the abundance of spawning in pelagic species of Thunnidae and Carangidae. During September 1998, a significant increase in the total of larvae of the studied species (9325 larvae/100m2) in comparison with May 1999 (5945 larvae/100m2) is noticeable, when historically May coincides with spawning peaks of studied species.en
