Alternative Title
Selectivity experience with bottom trawl nets using selectivity grids applied to Peruvian hake (Merluccius gayi peruanus)
Abstract
The selectivity processes carried out by the Instituto de Mar del Perú (IMARPE) in the northern area of the country (Piura) counted on the cooperation of experts from the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) provided through the Argentine Fund for Horizontal Cooperation (FO-AR). In order to evaluate the response of the selector system according to the spatiotemporal biological and fishery conditions of the target resource, experimental tests were performed with the selective device called DEJUPA (device for the escape of juveniles of fishes in the trawl nets) on board of the scientific research vessel ‘José Olaya Balandra’ in June 2007. Three grids with 31.7, 35.5 and 42.2 mm inter rod distance were used. The cover codend method and the maximum likelihood function for the curve fitting were employed. Analysis of the relevant factors that affect size selectivity and comprise catch volume, resource density, size structure, by-catch and individuals behaviour was performed. The fishing operations allowed to obtain the L50% of the DEJUPA-codend system for hake that were 32, 34 and 36 cm and corresponded to the selector devices with a 31.7, 35.5 and 42.2 mm bar spacing, respectively. The selectivity of the three grids was evidenced and proved. However, the results obtained are considered preliminary due to the presence of a large amount of specimens of sizes smaller than the regulated length that show the need to develop a larger number of replicas in order to infer what was observed in the study.
