Alternative Title
Results of experimental trawling survey May-June 1996 in gulf of Gabes
Abstract
The findings are given of trawling survey of shrimp (Penaeus kerathurus) fisheries in the Gulf of Gabes. The sea bottom was found to be sandy-muddy, rich in benthic organisms (echinoderms, holothurians, sponges, molluscs etc.). With respect to fish potential, Zarrat and Gabes show the best mean yield per hour with a maximum of about 88 kg. Shrimp alone represented approximately 15% of the landings. However, discarded small fish comprised 33% of the total catches. Analysis of the size distribution of the fish sampled showed that the majority were composed of the first age group of striped seabream, common pondara and bluespotted seabream. However, the shrimp, cuttlefish and common sole were mature individuals
