Gonadal histology of lobster Panulirus argus. 2. Male
Abstract
The macroscopic and microscopic structure of the gonads of Panulirus argus and the dynamic of its development during the reproductive cycle were studied in 91 testes of males between the 66.6 and 162 mm of carapace length. The samples collection has been carried out in the Southwest region of the Gulf of Batabanó. The cellular types proposed according to the morphology and diameters (average diameter and 95% confidence limits) in the testes of the males are: EG (19.45 ± 1.02 μm), ECI (15.25 ± 0.92 μm y 9.25 ± 0.6 μm), ECII (10.75 ± 1.25 μm), ET (6.8 ± 0.6 μm) and EZ (3.5 ± 0.3 μm). The vas deferens in their half portion show espermatophores with different development grade within, whose arrangement defines the structure of the espermatophores placed in the breastbone of the females. We propose for the males three stages of gonadal development: Stage I (not developed); Stage II (in development); Stage III (initial maturity and advanced maturity).
