Gonadal Histology of the spiny lobster Panulirus argus. 1. FemalesAbstract
The macroscopic and microscopic structure of the gonads of Panulirus argus and the dynamic of its development during the reproductive cycle were studied in 24 ovaries of females between the 61 y 127.1 Lc. The collection of the samples has been carried out in the Southwest region of the Gulf of Batabanó. The cellular types proposed according to the morphology and its diameters (average diameter and 95% confidence limits) in the ovary of the females are: Oogonium (19.70 ± 0.63 μm), Oocyte in first stage of development (OI, 54.80 ± 1.81 μm), Oocyte in advanced growth (OII, 95.29 ± 3.98 μm) and ripe oocyte (OIII, 427.3 ± 28.43 μm). It has been observed that the diameters of the OII can be differentiate in two groups depending on the carapace length (in the present study named OIIA and OIIB); in females between 61 and 96 mm CL, the average diameter and 95% confidence limits of OIIA was 95.29 ± 3.98 μm and in females between 97 and 127 mm CL the average of OIIB was 135.79 ± 5.96 μm. We propose for the females five stages of gonadal development: Stage I: (immaturity); Stage II: (begin of the development); Stage III: (half develop); Stage IV: (final develop pre-ovulatory) and Stage V: (Regression or postspawns phase). Atretic cells are described in different phases of gonadal development.
