Trophic levels of ecological importance and relationship with some physical and chemical parameters in the estuarine lagoon system Chantuto-Panzacola, Chiapas, Mexico.
Abstract
Chantuto-Panzacola coastal lagoon system is located within the protected natural area Biosphere Reserve La Encrucijada, Chiapas, Mexico. The aim of this study was to determine the spatial and temporal variation of the trophic and ecological indexes to know if they exhibit relationship with 12 physico-chemical parameters in this system. Trophic and ecological indexes were calculated in eight sampling stations: Relationship (C/Chl a),Pigments diversity index of Margalef D 430/D665 (IM), Carlson’s Trophic State Index (TSI) and Tropics Index (TRIX); and the physico-chemical parameters: temperature (°C), pH, salinity (ups), transparency and depth (m), orthophosphate (PO 3 -4), total phosphorus (PO 4), nitrate (NO -3), nitrite (NO -2), ammonium (NH +4), total nitrogen (NO -3+ NO-2+ NH+4 ), concentration of Chl aand phytoplankton primary productivity. Pigments diversity index (D 430/D 665) shows that most values are low and occur more frequently during the dry season. The TSI classifies the two climatic season in βMesotrophic (dry season) and αMesotrophic (rainy season); also, considering the sampling stations, ranked Chantuto lagoon and Los Cerritos in αEutrophic. The trophic index TRIX ranked to the system in 6-8 with poor water quality, highly productive and a level higher trophic. All trophic indices classify Chantuto-Panzacola system in the same trophic level, mainly during the dry season and lagoons Chantuto and Los Cerritos. The analysis indicates that at least eight physico-chemical parameters positively influence and determine the variations of the primary productivity and some of the indexes.
