Alternative Title
Intensive culture experiments of the rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis.
Abstract
An intensive 4-day batch culture study of small rotifers, Brachionus rotundiformis,to feed marine fish larvae was carried out, using artificial feeds and pure oxygen. Best results, with densities of 1 380 ±12 rotifers/mL, were obtained with pure oxygen and air supplies, open water flow, sponge type synthetic fiber for organic matter collection, metering pumps for feed supply and Culture Selco Plus® as artificial feed. Environmental parameters were stable and acceptable intervals. Best treatments presented 10-15 ppm dissolved oxygen, 8,0-8,5 pH, <0,2 ppm NH 3 , 0,25-0,45 growth rate, fecundity ≥0,35, and 20-35 %, percentage of female with eggs 20-35 %.
