Alternative Title
The giant tiger prawn, Penaeus monodon, distribution (Fabricius, 1798) in the Cuban shelf. Perspectives and future actions.
Abstract
The tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon)is found in the shelf of several countries of Caribbean and North America, which constitutes a peril for the autochthonous biodiversity. In Cuba it was reported as exotic species in May 2012 in the area of Júcaro. Its distribution and abundance was determined from the capture reports. The results showed that P. monodonis distributed mainly in the coastal areas of Ana Maria and Guacanayabo gulf. Its presence has been increased in 2012, fundamentally in the areas of first discovery. The environmental conditions of the region Suroriental of Cuba, favors the reproduction and establishment of P. monodon, being found pre-adults and adults individuals. Keeping in mind that this species is voracious carnivorous there is apprehension that its establishment in the area could affect the native species. We consider that it is premature to take eradication actions. Its capture by commercial fishing allow a preliminary control and also to evaluate the dispersion and abundance of this species. It should be implemented a system of “early alert” that allows to know the dissemination to other areas. Although its abundance doesn’t reach commercial proportions, it should be evaluate the possibility of its culture.
