Alternative Title
The characteristics of fish spawning in Lithuanian Baltic coastal zone
Abstract
The present investigation considers reproduction of the Baltic fish (herring, sprat, sand goby, and sandeel in the Lithuanian coastal zone, which is largely exposed to anthropogenic impact. Seasonal dynamics of species and size composition of fish eggs and larvae have been studied. The data reflect spawning periods of fish and development of their eggs and larvae at the various depth range. The areas of most considerable amounts of fish eggs and larvae have been identified. It was shown that, due to the decline of spawning areas in the region, the abundance of spring spawning herring larvae has been diminished by an order of magnitude in comparison with the 1950s. Abnormal embryos of sprat as well as abnormal larvae of sprat, herring and sand goby were recorded in the surface layers of the coastal zone.
