Long-term prediction of herring year-class strength in the Gulf of Riga and the Eastern Baltic according to the system of environmental factors
Abstract
Using the data for the 1970-1985 period, correlations have been reveled between the 0-group herring and the system of environmental factors: - water heat reserve in winter and summer, young herring and larvae food amount in spring, solar activity within the first summer in the herring life cycle (the Gulf of Riga); - abundance of the 0-group herring in the Gulf of Riga, solar activity throughout the year following the herring spawning, food biomass in the first feeding period of the young herring, water salinity in winter (the Eastern Baltic). These factors, separate and combined, affect the young herrings differently. Multiple regression equations have been calculated for predictions of the year-class strength 3 month earlier of its birth and for the nearest 1-5 years (in the Gulf of Riga), and for the nearest year (in the Eastern Baltic). The article gives the schemes for ecosystem relations of the young herring abundance with the environmental factors in cases when correlation coefficients are statistically reliable.
